The  most neglected part of any deck, is the support joist.

As of January 1, 2004, the decking story has changed. No more arsenic-treated CCA wood can be used in residential construction. On the good news side, new wood preservatives which have replaced CCA are safer for you and your family; on a less encouraging note, these new pressure-treatment chemicals accelerate the corrosion of the galvanized metal components used on your deck (i.e. screws, nails, joist hangers, etc.) Have you ever replaced a deck because of rot? Whether you have or have not, the areas that can wreak most havoc are those underneath the surface decking boards — places that cannot be easily seen.

The pictures you see are extreme cases, they are of decks that have been neglected for several years. You can help prevent this from happening by performing proper deck maintenance.
